Description
There are several inspirations behind this design.
The first is the belief (I don’t know if it’s only Italian?) according to which lizards, or two-tailed reptiles in general, bring good luck.
I’ve heard this since I was a child, and the idea that an animal can have a double ends has always fascinated me a lot.
It actually happens that some snakes with biicephaly are born!
I find it just magical.
.
For this reason, I was struck by an Aztec sculpture (dating back to the 15/16th century) depicting a two-headed snake. It could be a reference to Quetzalcoatl, a serpent god who symbolized both death and resurrection. ?
The figure of two-headed mythical snakes is also present in other cultures, such as the mythological Amphisbaena, with a head at each end, spawned from the blood dripped from Gorgon Medusa’s head.
.
I did my best to make a rustic, antique-looking medal depicting a two-headed snake. I gave the back a scratched texture and engraved the Algiz rune, dear to me, as symbol of protection.
